Favourite things lately

Just a snap shot of things that have made me happy lately :)

Oysters and burrata on sourdough with new friends at river cafe (ordered by my lovely friend Kay, though I snagged a bite!)

Grilled Squid salad at Cibo. One of my fave places ever. The squid was fresh and the salad was the perfect mixture of sweet and fruity with lots of veg and squid grilled to perfection.

Grapefruit ginger sangria at boxwood on lilac festival day. I need to go to boxwood more often. It such a great mix of a casual fresh local food with really great real flavours. My dining companions were delightful as well!

The icecream cookie we shared for dessert at boxwood. Ginger cookie with honey oat gelato? Unreal.

The Victoria sponge cake I made for our ladies tea. Though it wasn’t perfect, it was still delicious! I’m definitely no baker. The centre was filled with Sam’s amazing homemade jam that she whipped up with raspberries and chia seeds! Ingenious.

My newly purchased wedding necklace! I love it hard.

Till next time!!

Sunny Saturday Brunch at Cucina

Happy weekend! Yesterday, amidst studying for finals and doing 3 big papers I went out for brunch with some of my favorite gals. My friend Melanie picked the place, and I’m very glad because we went to Cucina, somewhere I haven’t been before and somewhere I would most definitely go again! Their brunch menu was awesome and the space was bright, fresh and perfect for a Saturday morning. Kind of reminded me of a mod Italian cafe of something.

We started sharing an order of ricotta fritters. They were these lovely little donut things served with a light delicate homemade apricot jam. They tasted doughy and lemony, I would have totally gone for another order!

We split an order of 6 which was great for a little taste!

I was feeling more on a lunch mood than breakfast so I ordered the “BBJ” or bacon, basil, jam. It was basically a bit which came with a homemade tomato jam. It didn’t cone with any sides or anything so I added the gnocchi hash (which was the best part of the dish!)

image

The sandwich was just meh, the tomato jam was not as favourable as I had hoped. The basil was nice but I’ve definitely had better BLT sandwiches.

image

Like I said the gnocchi was by far my fave!! It was perfect as a hash and was the perfect little portion too. Onions were a great addition.

My companions all purchased brunchy related items, from skillet, to eggs Benedict’s (with ratatouille!), to this amazing looking wild mushroom thing with poached eggs (at the back!).

image

All in all though, was very pleased with this new discovery, though next time I wanna order something brunchy!

Now, back to work!!

Lunch at Brasserie bistro

wpid-IMAG0370.jpg

Hello! Sunday I went to lunch to discuss my friend Ricki’s bachelorette party! This is gonna be one good party! We went somewhere closeby and hit up the brasserie bistro. It was surprising unbusy for a Sunday afternoon on Calgary, and they serve brunch! My companions got breakfasty food in the form of French toast and omelettes while I opted for the croque monsieur with a side of tomato soup.

image

It was just the right amount! Though perhaps there could have been a tiny more soup. The breadstick was flaky and buttery and the soup was velvety smooth. The sandwich was good, though the mustard wasn’t as flavourful as I hoped.

image

I also indulged and got a not-so-virgin Shirley temple that I didn’t snap a pic of. It was delicious!

Later that day Andrew and I stopped by the newly opened Sidewalk Citizen bakery now attached to Sunnyside Market. It is fabulous! They have the most delicious breads, salads and sandwiches! This will definitely be a regular spot for me.
